Fulltime: Colombia 1 – Costa Rica 0

In this afternoon’s Copa America game, Colombia defeated a young Costa Rican side 1-0.

A confession: I missed the match and spent the day at the beach. I hope you’ll all forgive me but the weather was too nice to stay indoors. From the match reports and highlights I’ve seen, the winners deserved their three points.

Despite a multitude of chances, Colombia didn’t get their goal until just before the half when forward Adrian Ramos latched onto Freddy Guarin’s lovely through ball and finished past the helpless Costa Rican ‘keeper.

Costa Rica sent a youth squad to this tournament and their inexperience showed. In the 27th minute, striker Randall Brenes was given a straight red card by referee Mr. Osses for a brutal studs-up challenge on a Colombian defender. It was all up-hill for Costa Rica from there and goalie Leonel Moreira did well to keep the scoreline down.

Costa Rica's players are dismayed after striker Randall Brenes was deservedly dismissed for a dangerous tackle on Luis Perea

Colombia should present a stern challenge to hosts Argentina when they meet in Santa Fe on the 6th while youthful Costa Rica would do well to earn a point against a sturdy Bolivian side the next day.
